Atlanta, GA, May 24, 2010 - Hearts Everywhere Reaching Out (H.E.R.O.) for Children, Inc. has been selected as the beneficiary of the 2011 Cathedral of Saint Philip Antiques Show & Tour of Homes. The milestone year will allow H.E.R.O. to partner with the Episcopal Church Women on a show that has raised $3,000,000 for Atlanta community nonprofits over the past 16 years alone. The event has been named the city’s most prestigious antiques show featuring jewelry, paintings, silver and other items from the 18th and 19th centuries. The weekend culminates with a tour of some of the Buckhead community’s most beautiful homes.

The 2011 show will take place the first week in February 2011 at the Cathedral of Saint Philip located at 2744 Peachtree Road in Buckhead. The event will include a gala preview party (February 2), antiques show (February 3-5), learning lectures featuring notable industry professionals & special guests, and the tour of homes (February 6-7). A team of H.E.R.O.’s leaders, including Board Chair Ralph Olson & Executive Director Donna Drakes, presented to a selection committee made up of the shows past and future show chairs. The 2011 co-chair Cindra Brown said that “the mutually beneficial partnership between the 2011 show committee and H.E.R.O. is inspiring. Our ultimate goal is to highlight and raise support for an often overlooked population.” Susan Graham, who also serves as the 2011 event chair, said “We are excited to have the opportunity to help increase awareness of this vibrant organization in the Atlanta community!” H.E.R.O’s board chair, Ralph Olson, is “looking forward to working with the Cathedral Co-Chairs to make this 40th anniversary the best year ever!”

In addition to the fiscal reward of being named show beneficiary, the partnership will position H.E.R.O. to gain more exposure in the community and allow others to see the ‘front lines’ work they are doing throughout metro Atlanta and Georgia. H.E.R.O.’s Executive Director is “humbled to have been selected as the 2011 beneficiary. About H.E.R.O. for Children, Inc.

H.E.R.O. for Children, Inc.’s mission is to improve the quality of life for children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS through enriching programs, unforgettable experiences, and connections with the community. H.E.R.O. was founded in 2003 by two University of Georgia graduates (Ryan Gembala and Garrett Gravesen) who had separate, but similar experiences working with children infected with and affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa and Brazil. Though the children’s basic needs (i.e. food, housing, and medical attention) were being addressed, no ‘quality of life’ (QOL) care services were being provided. Research ‘back home’ revealed that only 12 of the 500 HIV/AIDS service organizations here in Georgia offered support to children, and none specifically addressed their QOL needs. As a result, H.E.R.O. for Children, Inc. was created. H.E.R.O defines quality of life as the degree to which an individual enjoys physical, social, and emotional well-being, and sees him/herself as being able to experience future success and fulfillment. Under this umbrella, we offer emotional support through mentoring relationships, life skills training and development, reading enrichment, and expanded life exposure through a wide variety of opportunities and experiences (including “unforgettable,” one-day, recreational events and a Holiday of HEROs program- via which children receive presents during the holiday season). H.E.R.O. is presently developing health education, college preparation, and employment readiness programs that meet the special needs of our clientele.
